Colony Magazine
Publication about ants & their parallels with socailism
Task: The brief for this project was to come up with a design piece based on our intepretation of the word "fragility."
Outcome: I chose the concept of how something can be fragile on its own, but with strength of numbers it can become strong. As this idea was similar to the ideals of communism I used a Russian communist influence in my design. I used the lifestyle of ants to illustrate the concept because as well as being so fragile on their own, ants have incredible strength in numbers, in fact 10% of the world's total animal mass is made up of ants. Also ant societies have parallels to communist societies, with worker ants, army ants and ants sacrificing themselves for their colonies. I also found out there was a "supercolony" that stretched 6000km across Europe.
